Siglion’s masterplan for Seaburn aims to put the area firmly on the map as a superb seaside destination, with seafront cafes, restaurants and leisure spaces, backed with new houses and apartments for residents.
Seaburn has a proud history as a thriving resort with a permanent fairground, amusement arcades, restaurants and bandstands attracting tourists to Sunderland enjoying deck chairs and donkey rides on the beach on annual holidays.
As with many UK seaside towns, its popularity has declined especially as a destination for family holidays. Today the components of Seaburn’s seafront – promenade, amusement arcades, restaurants, and hotel are all present but underused and in varying states of disrepair.
We love the location, the history and the potential of Seaburn, and believe that Seaburn has the ability to become a 21st century seaside resort, and a strong destination for people to live, work and visit repeatedly. The three kilometre stretch of sandy beach from Roker to Seaburn is a massive asset to build upon.
We aim to make Seaburn a distinctive, popular and first choice destination to attract visitors and families from the city and across the region to live, work and visit.
Siglion’s vision for Seaburn will bring together high quality design and place-making with a range of new seafront venues that provide a year-round appeal regardless of the weather. It will also attract people looking for a fantastic place to live and bring up a family, ideal for commuters to nearby cities or towns, or as a retirement location, as part of Sunderland’s aspiration to be ‘the UK’s most liveable city’.
SEASIDE RETAIL AND LEISURE
Space for smaller traditional seaside activities, such as an ice cream shop, fish and chip restaurant, bucket and spades, arts and crafts, as well as larger leisure activities will bring new colour and life to the area.
The masterplan can include a large leisure unit over two storeys, which we will actively market to attract national and international occupiers, together with smaller ground floor units to cater for the small and medium sized cafes, restaurants etc.
Cut Throat Dene will extend the leisure activities on offer with traditional seaside adventure golf at the entrance and areas of formal and informal play, as well as walking routes.
The 4* Marriott hotel could be complemented by a 3* boutique or aparthotel operator, and we see commercial potential to develop some additional niche specialist shops. Combining this with the new café-bars and restaurants and quality leisure attractions, both indoor and outdoor, making Seaburn an all year round leisure destination.
Seaburn will offer a variety of housing to appeal to a wide audience, family homes to the rear of the site and high quality larger than average apartments overlooking the sea. The design of both these types of housing will be high quality, stylish and aspirational.
The comprehensive masterplan will put Seaburn firmly on the map as a great destination for all age groups, and boost its reputation as a fantastic 21st century seaside attraction.
