MEET ONE OF OUR BUSINESSES
Maxim Brewery grew out of the closure of iconic Sunderland brand Vaux in 1999. It has kept alive the local production of Double Maxim, the North East’s oldest beer first brewed in 1901 and a range of other bottled and cask beers including Samson, Swedish Blonde, Wards Best Bitter and Lambton’s.
The company, headed by Mark Anderson, employs seven staff with some having worked at Vaux, Wards, Federation and Newcastle Breweries and began full production near Houghton le Spring in 2007 within a large Siglion Workspace.
Maxim’s 20 barrel brewery equipment was previously at the Canongate Brewery in Edinburgh’s historic Old Town. This was Scottish & Newcastle’s pilot brew house and was built to a very high specification. Indeed, it remains probably the best equipment of its size anywhere in the UK today ensuring that the Maxim Brewery can maintain the highest quality and guarantee a regular supply of cask, keg and bottled beers to the drinkers of the North East.
Maxim Brewery supplies a huge variety of customers in the North East. As well as local pubs and pub chains including JD Wetherspoon and Sir John Fitzgerald, its beers can be found on the shelves of selected Asda, Morrison’s, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Co-op stores, as well as cash and carries including Macro, Bestway and Booker.
Maxim is now aiming to build up its national presence by boosting its strong quality control systems to earn Society of Independent Brewers’ Association (SIBA) and British Retail Consortium (BRC) accreditations, which are recognised by the major pub and retail brands.
